Domain Name Squatting
I have written about domain name squatting before but thought I would return to the subject to cover some of the reasoning behind it all.
The main aim of a cyber squatter is usually to profit from registering a domain name that is infringing on someone else's intellectual property or trademark. In the early days it was just plain and simple. You could just pick a well known household name and register one of the many domain extensions.
As the practice evolved squatters would register film names, song names and even famous names in the hope of monetizing type in traffic or selling the domain back for a quick profit.
These days there are literally thousands of domain names registered daily the infringe on other companies trademarks. Myspace for example grew to become very popular, domainers picked up on this and started registering domains with the word Myspace in them. Myspace are pursuing these individuals now.
