Domain name shortage

No need to panic, there isn't actually a shortage of domain names. Well at least not in the sense that there is an almost infinite combination of 65 character domain names that can be created.

I am talking about the number of useful domain names that have been registered but not used. There are several webmasters who have admitted recently in their blogs that they have registered way more domains than they have active sites. The usual reason for this is that they have an idea for a site but never get around to actually building it.

There are also those that register domains as an investment with the intention of selling them on as a profit at a later date. You can find these domain names for sale at such places as Sedo where domain names are offered with a hefty price tag.

While there is nothing wrong with free enterprise and people wanting to make a living I do find it frustrating when it is almost impossible to find a decent relevant domain name. Maybe if webmasters took a leaf out of Google.

I do realise that there is sense in registering English words because of the direct type ins and the ease of recognition of such names makes them a premium asset so there will always be a market for such premium domain names. If more webmasters started to make up domain names rather than trying to keyword stuff a domain name into existence then I think there wouldn't be such frustration in coming up with a domain name.
