Inspired Domain name tips
A domain name is probably the most important part of your website. It's the first thing a visitor is greeted by even before they see your site. You only get one shot at choosing a name, you don't want to be lumbered with an awkward spammy domain.
Use the .com suffix
My first tip would be to go for a dot com. They can come up with as many new top level domains as they want but the dot com will always b synonymous with the internet. So make it easier on you and your visitors and use a .com suffix.
My only disclaimer to this is if you are going to be one of those trendy web2.0 types and break your name up into several pieces. By this I mean….
- del.icio.us
- Ilike.tv
- la.la
- windo.ws
Avoid underscores or dashes
Don't use underscores or dashes in your domain name unless you want to look spammy. I promise you that you will regret it later on. I made this mistake and learned from it now I avoid the dashed domain.
Keep it as short as possible
The shorter your domain name is the easier it will be to remember and spell. Try for something that uses dictionary terms. You can also come up with your own name by mixing real words or parts of words together. To get an idea try this web2.0 name generator for some ideas.
Register for the long term
If you are committed to your new site you should register your domain name for a minimum of 2 years or even better for 5 years. Search engines tend to take your site more seriously because domains that are registered for 1 year periods are often used by search engine spammers.
